BEAM for Indigenous Families
Adaptation of the BEAM program to better reflect the needs, values, and experiences of Indigenous families by:
Promoting cultural safety
Strengthening family & community wellbeing
Supporting intergenerational wellness
Advancing mental health equity
Relational & culturally grounded
BEAM Indigenous is being developed in partnership with Indigenous communities, Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers, and community organizations. Together, we are exploring how BEAM can reflect Indigenous strengths, values, and approaches to parenting and family wellbeing.
This work includes adapting program content and delivery to incorporate traditional teachings related to mental wellbeing, connection, parenting, and ceremony in ways that are meaningful and community informed.
The adapted program will be piloted with Indigenous maternal and 2 Spirit primary caregivers in Manitoba and evaluated to understand how it supports families and communities.
How Beam Indigenous Is Being Developed
Current Status
BEAM Indigenous is currently in the adaptation phase. We are analyzing findings from community focus groups to help guide modifications to the original BEAM content and ensure it reflects traditional parenting practices and teachings of First Nations communities in southern Manitoba.
Recruitment of Sister Supports (peer parent coaches) will begin in June, followed by relatives in the program recruitment in September. The first program implementation is planned for January 2027.
“BEAM offers such important services to families. I see the dedication that peer coaches invest into these relationships and the positive impact they have on the wellness of parents, in support of intergenerational family wellbeing.” - Sydney Andersen, Graduate Student BEAM Indigenous Project Lead
